WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away…

Some people enjoy the rain, and love to sit by a window and watch it fall from the sky.  They love the idea of grass and flowers and trees getting nourished with every drop.  Some people like to read or nap while the rain falls.  They find rain to be a beautiful thing.  On the other hand, there are some people who cannot drive in the rain, act like they will melt if they get wet walking to their car, and get annoyed when they have to get out in the rain!  Growing up in south Louisiana, we had a love/hate relationship with the rain.  In the summer, most afternoons would involve a 15-minute rain shower, and then the sun would come back out!  So, you had to love the rain for cooling things off, but hate that the rain was so consistent.

When there hasn’t been any rain for days, weeks, or even months, and the sun has dried up every plant and the grass is brown, and the lakes and rivers are drying up, and the crops are dying too, any amount of rainfall is a welcome gift!  Some of you can remember times in the past when there was a drought, and that caused some serious concern.  You had to conserve water, you prayed for rain, you hoped the farms would make it, and all the time you looked up to the sky to see a dark cloud, hoping today would be the day for rain.

In the book of Joel, because of their sin, God’s people needed rain desperately.  They had neglected their relationship with God, and as a result, judgment from God had caused all the vegetation and crops to be destroyed.  However, when they finally turned from their sin, God sent the rain and many blessings with it!  Maybe right now, you’re going through a time in your life that is spiritually dry.  Maybe your home needs God’s blessings so that you can make it through some tough moment.  Perhaps you’re looking for some sign and praying desperately for God to do something in your life.  Pray.  Seek God.  Turn from any sin in your life.  Trust the Lord.  The book of Joel shows us that God is patient, loving and merciful, and He will bless you, if you’re truly seeking Him!
