WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Who Are You?

I’ve been fascinated with the question of “why” when it comes to crimes that are committed against other people.  Getting inside the brain of someone who decides to harm another person can be both interesting and disturbing.  I’ve watched too many true crime documentaries to count in which the show seeks to uncover the underlying reason for the awful event.  That being said, I’ve boiled all the hours of documentaries and books and articles down to one basic theory as to what drives a person to do such things.More than saying it was sin that led them to decide like that, the primary reason stems from the fact that the person who committed the crime has a misplaced identity.  They have come to believe something tragic about themselves, as well as something about other people, which they believe gives them to right to take another person’s life.  At the core, they believe themselves to be superior in some way.  They also believe the person they are harming is worth less to society, and that all of us would somehow be better off without them on the planet.  At the heart of sinfulness, we exalt what we think, how we feel and what we want over everyone else, even over the life of another human.

When the Bible tells us who we are, we are given our identity through the cross of Jesus.  We are washed clean from our sin by the blood of Jesus, filled with the Spirit of God, and directed by the Word of God.  Our identity, and “who we are,” comes from God finding value in us, and calling us then to love and serve others.  Unless we embrace the identity of who we are in Christ, we will never be able to see ourselves how God sees us, nor will we be able to see others how He sees them!   Instead of an identity based on sin and selfishness, we need an identity based on the Gospel!  Join us this Sunday as we begin a sermon series on Identity, and who we are in Christ.
