WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Please Won’t You Be…My Neighbor?
“Hi Neighbor!”  Does that sound pretty familiar to you?  From 1968-2001, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood aired on PBS for children and families to enjoy.  Fred Rogers, an ordained Presbyterian minister, gently and politely talked with children, parents, neighbors and friends on his show.  He dealt with subjects of inequality, racism, divorce, sadness and loneliness, along with teaching children how to use their imagination.  He had a kindness and a warmth about him that was consistent on and off the screen.  Even though his show went off the air in 2001, he taped a few special shows after retirement to walk children though difficult moments.  In his first year on the air, Mr. Rogers decided to help children and parents deal with the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy, who was running for president at the time.

I watched a short video from 2002, which highlighted some special moments from the span of the show, and which also contained an interview with Fred Rogers and clips of him at events with dozens of people coming up to him for a hug and to thank him for the show.  The questions asked of him, and later on asked of his wife after he passed away in 2004, was simply, “Does the world need more Mr. Rogers’?”  And the answer is yes.  We need more born again Christians who influence the world with kindness, with warmth, with sincerity, with grace, with mercy, and with the love of Christ!  We need the church to be known for living out the presence of Christ in our lives.  We need for the world to see that Jesus has forever changed us, and because of that change, we are different.  And people need to know they are loved and valued, no matter who they are, and because God loves them, He sent His only Son to die for their sins so that they could be born-again, and have a home in heaven.  We need to be more like Mr. Rogers, and ultimately, we need to be more like Jesus!
