WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Stick-To-It-Ness
So the catalyst of this month and the following month is Joy. Joyful giving or just simply finding Joy in Christ. The concept of Joy seems to always bring me to the trials we go though in life. It is almost like Joy points me to not so joyful times. Some of you might be thinking “wait that isn’t how this is supposed to work”. Let’s look at James 1:2, “consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials”. Because of this verse Joy perfectly coincides with trials. Joy when you face trials, that is a hard thing for most everyone. How do we smile during trials. How do we face pain with a positive heart. Why would I need to have joy in hard times? Everyone understands my pain right? Lets move on to verse 3 “knowing that the testing of your faith produce endurance.” I am sure many people have heard the saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. In the military I heard that saying more than I can count. Yet, that seems to be the concept here it is not that it doesn’t hurt or that it’s not hard. No, we face truly difficult things. The reality of it though is we can find joy in the lessons God teaches. We can find joy in knowing that if we stay firm and trust God in this situation he can use it. In a commentary on this section of scripture Robert Plummer states that the reassurance comes in knowing “that God is using such trials to refine the Christian’s faith and produce “steadfastness” — endurance or stick-to-it-ness.” So our joy even in difficulties should come from the knowledge that God is growing us for something bigger. And those trials we endured could be the catalyst that speaks to the lives of others so let’s find joy in our “stick-to-it-ness”.
