WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Family and Moses
In recent weeks we have been talking about the Family. On May 5 we had vision Sunday where we talked about many things that were pointed toward the family including Milestones. The intent of the Milestones Ministry is to honor God by embracing the family completely. Often, when we talk about the family, we only look at passages of Scripture that say what we should be doing. We turn to Psalms or Proverbs and say, “Look how applicable this is to your life” and “You can fix this”. Some turn to places like Eph. 6:1 “children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right”. Then we speak to the kids and say, “See you need to listen to me”. We tell kids what they need to do, but we don’t take it much further than that.

I love that we talked about Moses last Sunday. Because, when it comes to the family he makes one of my favorite statements in Deut. 6:5-7, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.  These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up”. It is so impactful to me because of the word “teach”. We aren’t to simply tell our children what to do, but to teach them. It doesn’t say take them to church so the church can do all the work. No, instead Moses is teaching and then tells them they should be doing the same for their children as part of their everyday life. When they are home, when they wake up in the morning, and until they go to bed. Teaching requires understanding where people are and how to teach. If I wanted to do a 3 hour lecture for Keller who is 3, I wouldn’t be very successful. It doesn’t work. Instead I have to find simpler ways to teach him. Maybe by reading a book with a simple biblical lesson wrapped up in it. So, the key is to take the teaching to our children and making it a part of their lives as much as it is should be a part of ours.

Remember, Moses doesn’t say to stop teaching. Even as adults parents need to be engaging their children and even grandchildren. Moses tells us this in Deut. 4:9, “Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, son that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life: but make them known to your sons and grandsons.” Teaching in the family never ends. It only changed and adapts to meet the need of where the family is.

So where does the church come in? Like family, the church stands next to you, caring you through. If you have siblings then you have probably learned something from them (good or bad). That is the nature of the family. We are all in this together putting the teaching of Christ as our priority. That is the intent of the Milestone Ministry initiative. It is so we the church can do better at standing with our family members as they grow. Being a part of their lives completely.
