WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Discipline Isn’t Fun but Is Fruitful
You may be surprised to know that when I was a kid, I got in trouble a few times.  Maybe once or twice…a week!  Well, I wasn’t that bad and didn’t do too many crazy things, but from time to time, I would earn my share of discipline from my dad.  It all started with my disobedience, and being sent to my room to “think about” what I had done.  That was the worst!  I may have only been in my room for 15 minutes, but it felt like hours waiting for my dad to call me into his room for a second “discussion.”  That discussion usually started with me acknowledging that what I did was wrong, followed by the question.  The question was always, “How many do you want? One or two?”  There was no doubt that I knew exactly what he was implying!  I got to decide how many spankings I was going to receive that day.  My answer was always the same too.  I’d say, “None!” and my dad would say, “That’s not an option!”  Of course, I’d choose the lowest possible spankings, and my dad would make sure that one was a good one.

Even though I never enjoyed that painful process, my dad had a goal in mind with disciplining me.  Even in times when I was only sent to my room or grounded for a weekend, the discipline was necessary to teach me a lesson.  My dad’s goal for my life was in line with God’s goal for my life.  Learning to obey and to practice holiness is why my dad disciplined me, and is the same reason why God disciplines His children.  God knows what is best for our lives, and wants us to rely on His Spirit, to obey His Word, and to follow in the footsteps of His Son…and when we fail to do those things, out of love and with much grace, God disciplines us so that we learn how to obey Him and how to practice holiness.
