WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

Bro…Do You Even Lift?

Serious weight-lifters and bodybuilders know…they just know!  With one look, they can tell who does and who doesn’t lift weights.  They could take the time to ask you if you lift, but they don’t have to ask.  Now, I’ve made peace with the fact that my “physique,” or my lack of one, gives me away and I’ve never been asked if I lift weights.  However, I do have a membership at a local gym in which I just try and fit in.  There may be people there who are slightly less “fit” than I am, but there are more than a few who have sculpted their bodies to a shape mine will probably never be.  But who knows, maybe with a lot of hard work, I could get there.  Don’t laugh too hard!

In all seriousness, our walk with Christ is one that requires some heavy lifting and training.  Paul even instructed the church to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”  His encouragement isn’t calling people to work FOR salvation, but rather to work OUT what God has already worked IN!  So we need to work out…not just for physical exercise, but for our own spiritual development.  When we spend time in the Bible, make time to pray faithfully, share our faith with others, use our spiritual gifts to serve others, and make it a priority to worship with believers as often as we can, all of those moments count as a spiritual workout!  And we need to have moments of regular, disciplined exercise to grow spiritually. So no matter how spiritually fit you think you are, make time with God today so you can get stronger in the Lord!
