WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

For Better or For Worse

Standing before a pastor, holding a soon to be spouse by the hand, in front of a bunch of friends and family, and feeling a bit overwhelmed, many husbands and wives have uttered those five words to one another.  Most of the time, they have no idea what life will bring in the future that will be “for better” or “for worse.”  Two young people standing before God make a commitment to each other, and have no idea what might come their way to test that commitment.  They hope for “the better” and pray there’s not too much of “the worse,” but they have no idea how much of either of those two things will happen in their lives.

Some of you have experienced moments that make you smile every time you think about them, while many of you have experienced things in your life that make you cry when you think how challenging those times were. However, when we make a commitment of “for better or worse,” that means no matter how high or how low life takes you, the commitment is there!  My prayer for every married couple in our church is that you would live out and express that commitment to each other every day.  Go back to the moment you looked your spouse in the eyes, and said those words, and recommit yourself to them every day.  In the same way, there will be many ups and downs in our walk with Jesus.  You’ll experience times that you’ll want to remember, as well as times you want to forget.  Yet, even though all of that, Jesus is always faithful to stay with you!  That commitment He has to us, and that I pray you have toward Him, is what gives us joy no matter what the ups and downs might be!
